Atten Ash ne précise pas la couleur du sablier qui fait l'objet de son premier album : à mon avis, il doit être bleu parce que The Hourglass fait remonter le temps. Le trio américain rend un hommage plus qu'évident au death/doom metal mélodique des années 90. Bien que vigoureux ("See You...Never"), les riffs n'en sont pas moins émouvant, flirtant parfois avec une atmosphère funéraire ("Song for the Dead", "First Day") sans jamais tomber dans le pathos facile. Les solos sont extraordinaires !

Lord Trowe fait partie de ces rares artistes dont l'ambition créatrice est telle que ses idées évoluent autour d'un concept carrière : après l'accouchement qui se produisait dans The Foetal Mind, il grandit et gagne en maturité dans son projet Deprived of Light. Coloured Death a tous les traits de son père The Grand Contraction mais va encore plus loin dans le mélange des genres, incluant death metal, post-rock et même chant clair dans son blackgaze déjà très riche. Une très belle expérience !

Galaktik Cancer Squad a muté : dans Ghost Light, la présence du chant se confirme (et il est très furieux) et la production met la batterie un peu en retrait, ce qui permet d'oublier qu'elle est programmée. Malgré tous ces changements, le travail de compositions sur les guitares, plus proches du black metal, est toujours aussi impeccable avec quelques riffs, notamment sur "In lichterlosen Weiten" et "Hypnose", qui sont presque légendaires — comprenne qui pourra ! Vivement un prochain album !!
