Étant donné que l'espace est surtout constitué de vide, tout objet qui est mis en mouvement y dérive à l'infini : c'est de cela que s'inspire Astral Luminous pour son premier album Lunaric Tide. Le black metal cosmique de Scott Johnson est hypnotique, pratiquement berçant par ses répétitions. Mais j'ai aussi l'impression qu'il compte trop sur ce phénomène : l'introduction est une belle impulsion initiale mais après ça on erre parfois sans rencontrer d'obstacle, ce qui peut lasser. Un bon début !

Faire passer le black par un équipement daté pour rendre le son brut de décoffrage, j'ai longtemps pensé que c'était Staurophagia le maître en la matière mais Obsidian Tongue l'a fait avant lui et tout aussi bien dans son premier opus, Volume I: Subradiant Architecture. On se retrouve ainsi avec un black metal qui rend hommage à l'école norvégienne, entre poésie ésotérique ("Approaching the Well", "It Dangles from the Bones") et guitares furieuses, mais il est aussi très moderne. Un bon album !

Certains vont bondir à l'idée de "rafraîchir" le black metal dépressif mais c'est bien à cette tâche que se consacre Funeral Fornication dans Solitude and Suicide. Les mélodies lancinantes tournent en boucle ("Channeling Volatile Energy"), Vultyrous hurle son désespoir à s'en déchirer les cordes vocales et la production est distante. Mais c'est surtout par les synthés qu'il surprend car ils sont très dramatiques voire théâtraux, ils nous attirent dans la tourmente comme le chant des sirènes...
